Birds

Birds are feathered, winged, egg-laying, vertebrate animals which include around 10,000 living species. They inhabit ecosystems around the globe and range in size from tiny (such as hummingbirds) to some over 9 feet tall! (Ostrich)

Birds live and breed in almost all habitats and live on all seven continents. Many bird species have established breeding populations in areas to which they have been introduced by humans. Birds' diets are varied and typically consist of nectar, fruit, plants, seeds, and various small animals.

Since birds are highly visible and common animals, humans have had a relationship with them since the dawn of man. Sometimes, these relationships are mutualistic, like the cooperative honey-gathering among honeyguides. Other times, they may be commensal, as when species such as the the House Sparrow have benefited from human activities. Several bird species have become commercially significant agricultural pests, and some pose an aviation hazard.
