The skunk is a mammal commonly known for it's ability to secrete a liquid into the air which has a very harsh, foul odor. Skunks are generally black-and-white in color, with some being brown or cream colored. Skunks vary in size from about 15.6 to 37 inches and can weigh up to 18 lbs.
Skunks have an omnivorous diet and typically act as scavengers. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regularly record over 1,000 cases annually of rabies in skunks. However, no recorded cases of rabies in humans can be attributed to skunk bite. Skunks were once common pets in households but their popularity has declined due to the Animal Welfare Act of 2006, which made it illegal to remove a skunks scent glands.
